Fare Review & Fare Cap Scheme 2025 29/12/2022

It has been publicised that a number of bus operators across England are participating in the voluntary bus fare cap scheme, which capped all single fares to £2 from January 2023 to December 2024.  The scheme has been extended again and increased to £3 from 1st January 2025 to 31st December 2025 when it is anticipated to be withdrawn.  We wish to make passengers aware that White Bus will not be participating in the scheme.

As a business, when the scheme was introduced, we had been recovering from the effects of revenue loss from the Covid-19 Pandemic, and latterly the operational cost increases from record inflation. To participate in the scheme means the business would effectively have to fund a percentage of the offer to passengers that would not be covered by Government funding. The DfT funding is fixed and therefore this scheme would not be a viable option for us to undertake.  

We believe that our fare structure offers passengers a fair value for money rate, and our ticket prices accurately reflect the rising costs of operating a viable bus network.  From 1st February 2025 we will be aligning our fares due to Customer feedback on our 446, 555 and 458 services with three simple fare bandings.  On average we have increased our single and return fares by 10p/20p respectively.  Our period passes have excellent value for money for our regular travellers, with our minimum single journey fare starting from as little as £1.79*.   We have also listened to our Customer feedback and increased the ticket options for sale on our White Bus App, which simplifies ticket purchases and makes travelling easier.
